Alex Carey's Stunning Century Aids The Baggy Greens Regroup From Early England Test Series Onslaught.
Following the frenzy of the Perth Test and the Gabba's pink-ball palooza, an outbreak of traditional style of Test cricket broke out on the turf of the Adelaide ground. Carey's day, however, was simply invaluable, peaking at 4.48pm when he elegantly drove Ben Stokes through the covers for three runs and the Adelaide faithful to rise in a huge roar. Coming off his masterful display with the gloves in Brisbane, his counterattacking 106 runs off 143 balls ensured that a post-lunch wobble to 94 for four did not become a full-blown collapse. At 34, Carey is a serious Test match player nowadays.
Australia undoubtedly left some runs on the field, though. Gone was that excessive pace and bounce of the first two Tests and in its place only a fraction of nibble when the right area was located.
The pitch also offered a bit of turn to Will Jacks, even if his control was that of a part-timer – hence figures of two for 105 off his 20 overs – and the balls that did to turn sharply will give hope to Nathan Lyon.
