Bullish Wilfried Nancy shows no fear of the sack yet the Parkhead faithful show wrath following derby defeat.
The under-pressure manager insisted he did not fear the sack, claiming, “I believe we are very near to things turning around,” in the wake of moving dangerously close to being fired with a comprehensive loss to their arch-rivals.
Another Meltdown Results in Derby Disaster
The home side were ahead the visitors at the break but a collapse after the break allowed the Gers to pull level on points with the current league title holders. Nancy, who was appointed from the MLS, has now presided over six losses in eight games.
“The board and I are united at the club,” insisted Nancy.
Asked directly about the speculation, he replied: “It’s not on my mind. I concentrate on working out methods to get the team to excel on the fine details.
Fan Fury Outside Parkhead
Hundreds of supporters voiced their fury – directed at the board and manager – in their hundreds at Parkhead. The board are reportedly likely to return to Martin O’Neill, who enjoyed a successful interim spell last year, if the Frenchman were sacked.
“It’s the results [that leads to pressure]. That is the situation for the moment. However by saying that’s how it is, that is not a sign that I am a defeatist guy. Absolutely not. What I mean we are really close, imminently close to turn things around.”
Focus on the Details
Nancy highlights the fact his team play well for 45 minutes at a time. In fact, were it not for missed chances they could have been greater than 1-0 up. “I saw enough except the fact that we haven’t scored our chances,” he said. “I accept that we lost, but I must remain fair.
“The level we had at certain moments was of top quality. That happened. I could not speak so positively if it was not the case. That is the reason, when it comes to wins, I said we've seen this before. Which is why I feel a change is coming to a shift in fortunes. Right now: the fine margins.”
“I saw plenty of positives that we did, as was the case today. The issue now is consistency. My message would change if I didn't believe it. Therefore I firmly believe we’re going to be able to fix this.”
Röhl’s Cautious Stance
Rangers manager refused to contemplate a championship push even after what appeared to be a statement victory. “Step by step, and we can gradually build momentum,” he said. “The belief in the squad is excellent.”
