Democrats Denounce Trump After He Suggests They Should Face Death Penalty
Democratic officials expressed fury after former President Donald Trump alleged a group of Democratic representatives of being "traitors" and stated they should be detained and punished "by death" following their release of a disputed video.
The Content That Sparked the Debate
The recorded message, published on Tuesday, includes six Democratic lawmakers who in the past worked in armed forces or intelligence roles.
"As we did, you all made an pledge to safeguard and support this national charter," the officials stated in the brief video. "Currently, the threats to our constitution don't only come from overseas, but from domestically. Our statutes are unambiguous, you can reject unlawful commands, you can reject illegal orders, you have to refuse improper directives. No one has to execute orders that contravene the legal system or our national charter."
Donald Trump's Incensed Response
The recorded statement seemed to trigger a angry response from the previous commander-in-chief.
On later in the week, Trump posted on his preferred platform: "This constitutes SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these turncoats to our United States should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In an additional publication, he wrote: "This is really bad, and Risky to our United States. Their comments cannot be allowed to persist. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a third publication, he stated: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, punishable by DEATH!" He also shared a comment that stated: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Democratic Representatives Answer
Following Trump's statements on that day, House Democratic leader released a unified declaration censuring the statements.
"Political violence has no place in the United States," they stated. "Elected officials who were featured in the video all acted our country with tremendous patriotism and excellence. We clearly censure Donald Trump's disgusting and harmful threats of violence against members of Congress, and appeal to Republican lawmakers to strongly do the same."
The opposition officials also stated that they had been in contact with protective services "to ensure the protection of these officials and their families."
"Donald Trump must right away remove these radical online messages and recant his aggressive rhetoric before he leads to violence," the announcement continued.
Lawmakers' Strong Answer
The officials who were featured in the video also released a response.
"We serve as veterans and security experts who value this United States and made an oath to safeguard and uphold the constitution of the United States," they said. "That oath continues forever, and we intend to maintain it. No warning, intimidation, or call for violence will stop us from that important obligation."
"The significant point is that the president deems it punishable by capital punishment for us to reiterate the law," they stated. "Our service members should understand that we have their support as they execute their vow to the constitution and obligation to adhere to only legal commands. It is not only the proper thing to do, but also our duty."
They continued: "All citizens must come together and condemn the ex-president's demands for our death and ideological conflict. This is a period for principled stance."
Additional Partisan Responses
The Opposition leader also condemned Trump's remarks and posted on digital platforms: "Let's be crystal clear: the former president is calling for the capital punishment of government members."
He stated: "This represents an outright THREAT. Every Senator, each house member, the entire nation – regardless of party – should censure this immediately and unconditionally."
The GOP leader justified Trump's claim that the Democrats had participated in "treason", labeling the video as "wildly inappropriate", stating: "This constitutes very risky, you have leading members of Congress instructing soldiers to ignore directives, I think that represents historic in US history."
The Republican leader also according to sources told the press that in what he read of Trump's publications, Trump was "describing the offense of treason" but that "attorneys have to analyze the terminology and establish all that."
White House Reaction
During a administration briefing on later that day, when inquired by a reporter, "Is the president want to execute congressional representatives?", the administration spokesperson replied: "No."
"We should understand about what the former president is responding to," the representative said. "We see sitting members of the federal government who coordinated to orchestrate a digital communication to personnel of the American armed forces, to active duty service members urging them to defy the executive's legal commands."
She said: "The purity of our armed forces rests on the command structure, and if that system is compromised, it can cause casualties, it can cause confusion, and precisely what these congressional representatives ... are essentially promoting."
