Keeper Mary Earps has emphatically said that her freshly launched personal story was not created to “tear anyone down” and shared worry that public reaction has been “misinterpreted.”

Disputed Remarks and Fan Backlash

The former England player, who had a vital part in the tournament success, faced backlash from supporters and Chelsea boss Sonia Bompastor after making remarks about former team-mate Hannah Hampton and coach Sarina Wiegman.

In her book, Earps reportedly claimed told Wiegman she was “encouraging negative conduct” by bringing Hampton back to the England squad after leaving her out for being “problematic and undependable.”

“The response has been immense to see how some things have been distorted,” Earps told reporters.

Clarifying Her Purpose

Earps clearly stated that her book was not meant to damage anyone.

• “That is not who I am as a person.”
• “This reflects reality. It has repercussions. It is not a show.”

She also remarked about how women’s football has evolved into a realm that has become “a bit like entertainment,” where personal lives are picked apart for people’s enjoyment.

Earps mentioned losing her spot as the first-choice keeper before the European Championship and how that strained her relationship with Wiegman.

She explained it was “not a rapid decline” in their dynamic—just a divergence in opinions—and she continues to admire the manager.

“Certain events that happened in the summer that I hoped had unfolded otherwise,” Earps added.

Personal Struggles

In the autobiography, Earps shared details of the harassment she endured at school, describing it as a “particularly challenging” chapter to go back to because it brought back past pain.

• “I always believed that people didn’t like me for the majority of my years.”
• “I was trained to feel like nobody really cares.”

These emotions led to anxiety episodes, and Earps revealed she had issues with body image and turned to alcohol during the Covid pandemic to handle emotional difficulties.

Relationships and Goals

Earps publicly revealed that she is in a partnership with Kitty and expressed pride about her relationship.

She also discussed her desire to be a mother and revealed she has frozen her eggs for future use.

“I deeply desire to be a mother and have a family of my own,” Earps stated. “I am passionate about soccer, but I wish to have a child in the future.”

Earps described the egg-freezing procedure as “crazy and invasive” and called for more studies tailored to sports professionals undergoing similar procedures.

During her remarks, Earps emphasized that she has no regrets about her sports path or life decisions, emphasizing that she always acted with integrity.
