Eurovision Used to Be a Whimsical Delight – Yet It Has Become a Calculated Tool to Sanitize Conflict.
A freshly coined term emerged a couple of months following the onset of the military campaign against Gaza. Known as WCNSF, it means “Child casualty without any family left”. This designation is found only in Gaza, as stated by doctors such as child health specialists. Normally, it is unusual for doctors to treat a child who has seen the death of their complete family. However, there has been nothing “normal” concerning the genocide in Gaza, where complete genealogies have been eradicated and the number of child amputees surpasses that of anywhere else in the world. No sense of normalcy in many doctors coming back from a landscape of rubble with accounts of children being systematically aimed at.
A Living Nightmare Despite a Supposed Ceasefire
Conditions in Gaza persist as hell on earth. Essential medical supplies are not getting in those in need, and international watchdogs assert that genocidal acts are continuing. Officials has denied these allegations, consistent with how it refutes everything it is charged with. Yet as young survivors are now enduring frigid conditions in improvised encampments, there is some ostensibly positive news: nothing is going to stop the Eurovision from pursuing its declared purpose of “unity and cultural exchange.” Organizers will continue to offer a prestigious stage for Israel, despite the fact that at least four European countries have now boycotted in dissent. And this, apparently, is what global togetherness manifests as.
Eurovision, of course prohibited Russia from taking part in 2022 due to the “grave situation in Ukraine”. Yet the conflict in Gaza seems treated differently.
Contradictory Principles
Forget the fact that Israel was criticized for irregular participation methods last year in what could be seen as an bid to manipulate Eurovision. Ignore the report that a young child was reportedly killed in Gaza just days ago. Forget the fact that attacks by settlers and forced displacement in the West Bank have escalated. Overlook the situation that international journalists are still prevented from freely reporting in Gaza. All of this, apparently, should be permitted to obstruct of Eurovision’s cherished spirit of unity.
The Contest Continues While Ignoring Unimaginable Suffering
Eurovision marks seven decades next year – almost double the current lifespan of a person in Gaza today. The broadcast will air, but it will likely never recapture the camp joy it historically embodied. An institution that once promoted togetherness has now become a transparent instrument to provide a cultural veneer for conflict.
