US air traffic controllers are increasingly seeking second jobs and calling in sick, as they remain on duty unpaid during the federal closure, the transport chief has announced.

"These professionals are becoming strained," the official informed Fox News on the weekend, as some flights were grounded on the Californian coast due to staffing shortages.

Following the government shut down on 1 October, flight controllers, who are deemed essential workers, were instructed to keep doing their jobs uncompensated.

But a number have been missing, causing airports to halt or reduce their plane traffic, which has added to delays caused by weather and additional factors.

Over three thousand American flights were delayed on Sunday, and Duffy said he expects the circumstances to grow worse.

"I am seeing the pressure," Duffy said in an interview on Sunday Morning Futures, adding that he had spoken to several controllers to listen to their concerns firsthand.

"They are pursuing side jobs, they're out there searching, 'Can I drive Uber, can I find another source of income to cover expenses?'" he added.

Duffy added that on Saturday twenty-two notifications at airfields indicated flights would be delayed due to a lack of employees - among the peak after the shutdown began.

The American federal closure entered its 26th day on the weekend, making it the second most extended shutdown in history.

He has consistently cautioned that flight authorities would slow down the quantity of aircraft in the sky if there is a deficit of security staff.

In his interview, he declined to respond straightforwardly when asked if it was secure to fly in the United States, and instead made a direct appeal to controllers.

"I need my controllers focused on the flight paths, not on the finances at their households," the official said.

On that day, certain flights were grounded at LAX due to employee deficits, leading to disruption at the fifth most active terminal in the nation and one of the busiest in the world, as well as additional travel stretching north to the metropolis of Oakland, California.

The FAA alert was issued at 08:45 local time on Sunday. Numerous trips were back on schedule by midday.

Flights at Newark Airport, however, were delayed an average of 82 minutes due to staffing shortages, and the authority said DFW, the second-busiest airfield in the country, could encounter problems from low staffing in the afternoon.

The FAA advised passengers in the state to check with airlines about revised flight schedules.

The issue precedes the third match of the championship, which is due to be played in Los Angeles on Monday night, and approximately four weeks before the Thanksgiving break, among the peak times to fly in the United States.

Pressure on US air travel helped end a federal closure in two thousand nineteen. At the time, the shutdown had entered its fifth week and disrupted airline operations, including aviator instruction.

It led several flight controllers to remain absent on the identical date on 25 January 2019, briefly halting travel at New York's LaGuardia airport.

On that date, the former president, who at the time was in his first term as leader, consented to approve a temporary funding measure, bringing an end to the federal closure after thirty-five days.
