Information Available About the Victims of the Bondi Beach Shooting
A minimum of 16 individuals lost their lives and in excess of 40 sustained injuries when assailants shot at a Hanukkah celebration at Bondi Beach, an attack local authorities are describing as a act of terrorism.
According to the most recent information, authorities have stated the death toll is 16, including one of the alleged gunmen. Additionally, 42 people with injuries were taken to hospital.
The deceased have not yet been publicly named, but authorities state their ages range between 10 and 87 years old.
Here are the victims who have been identified so far.
Eli Schlanger
Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.
Described as a father of five children, he served as the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and acquaintances described him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.
“How is it possible that a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a family member asked.
Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their newest son in October.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, according to his wife.
She recounted the events before the attack, explaining they had been standing together when the gunfire erupted. “He pushed his body up because he wished to be near me,” she stated.
The couple were both survivors of the Holocaust, having faced immense hardship in their childhood. They had later immigrated to Australia from Ukraine.
Dan Elkayam
The French authorities have confirmed that French man Dan Elkayam is among the dead.
Publicly, the Foreign Minister said that France shared the grief of his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This low act is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must combat,” the statement read.
One Child
A 10-year-old girl who was taken to the a children's hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, police have confirmed.
One Israeli Citizen
An Israeli citizen was a fatality in the incident, as per reports referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.
Those Injured
From the 42 people transported to hospitals, many remain under care, with a number in critical condition. Those hurt include two officers who attended the scene.
One of the injured is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to tackle one of the gunmen. Called a hero, he received bullet wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. It has been reported he was hurt and is receiving treatment in hospital.
He wrote, he described the incident as an “horrific scene,” but also noted the actions of those who came to assist. He stated he felt it was a “miracle” he survived.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was another casualty in the shooting. He said he heard “a large number” of shots.
“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I’ve been shot myself. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
