Preparations for Trump-Putin Talks Postponed Shortly Following Budapest Negotiations Suggested

There are "no arrangements" for US President President Trump to confer with Russia's Vladimir Putin "anytime soon", a administration representative has declared.

Recently Trump said he and the Kremlin leader would hold talks in Budapest soon to examine the war in Ukraine.

A planning session between America's top diplomat Secretary Rubio and his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov was planned for recently - but the administration said the two had had a "positive" discussion and that a meeting was no longer "needed".

The White House declined to provide further information on why the talks had been put on hold.

Previous Developments

The US president had discussed a Hungarian meeting via telephone with Putin, a day before meeting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in the Oval Office.

Certain accounts claimed his talks with the Ukrainian leader had been a "heated exchange", with insiders suggesting Trump had pressured him to cede significant territories of eastern Ukraine as part of a deal with Moscow.

However, on Monday Trump supported a peace initiative backed by Kyiv and European leaders to pause the conflict on the current front line.

"Leave it as is where it stands," he stated.

Russia has consistently objected against pausing the existing front lines.

Moscow was only interested in "enduring stability", Lavrov said on this week, implying that pausing conflict would merely represent a temporary ceasefire.

Political Perspectives

The "root causes" of the war required resolution, Lavrov stated, using Moscow's terminology for a set of comprehensive conditions that involve the acceptance of total Russian authority over the Donbas as well as the disarmament of Ukraine – a non-starter for Ukraine and its Western allies.

The Ukrainian president commented discussions about the battle positions were the "beginning of diplomacy" but that Russia was "doing everything" to evade negotiations.

He also said the exclusive issue that could cause Russia to "pay attention" was that of the delivery of extended-range arms to the Ukrainian military.

Military Considerations

The Russian president's spontaneous discussion with the US leader recently occurred before speculation that the US was planning to provide extended-range cruise missiles to Ukrainian forces that could possibly hit inside Russia.

The Ukrainian leader asserted it was the missile discussion that had forced Russia to engage in discussion. The talk about the weapons systems had emerged as a "valuable contribution" in diplomacy", he remarked.
