Red Cross Assists Militant Group in Search for Remains of Israeli Hostages in Gaza Strip

A Red Cross official confirmed that its representatives accompanied Hamas officials into areas of the Gaza Strip still under IDF authority to facilitate the hunt for the remains of individuals held captive.

Ceasefire Agreements and Captive Remains Return

Under the truce negotiated by the United States, which began on October 10, Hamas is obligated to hand over the bodies of all Israeli hostages promptly. In exchange, the Israeli government has agreed to transfer 15 Palestinian bodies for each Israeli.

Hamas has to date returned the bodies of fifteen of those taken hostage but zero in the last five days, as a portion of those remains are thought to be in locations beyond the yellow line designating the temporary truce line.

Red Cross Involvement as Neutral Intermediary

“At the request of the involved sides, the Red Cross accompanied a party to the conflict as the group searched for the remains of the deceased beyond the IDF-designated ‘yellow boundary’,” said a representative for the organization.

The spokesperson continued: “The parties to the hostilities determined the procedures of the mission and delegated the Red Cross to serve as a neutral intermediary. We was not involved in the discussions.”

The official further clarified: “Our team was not involved in the physical hunt for the deceased nor does it engage in the retrieval of human remains.”

Global Legal Standards and Duties

According to international humanitarian law, it is the responsibility of the parties involved in a hostilities to search for, gather, and retrieve the bodies of the deceased.

US Demand and Local Search Efforts

On Saturday, the US president issued a two-day ultimatum to the organization. “Hamas is going to have to begin returning the bodies of the deceased hostages, which include American citizens, promptly, or the additional nations involved in this significant truce will intervene,” he wrote on his social‑media platform.

When the two-day window neared, the group, accompanied by the Red Cross, teamed up with teams from Egypt, who were authorised by Israeli authorities to look for bodies beyond the boundary indicating the Israeli military’s pullback inside Gaza. An official representative said the delegation would use excavator machines and trucks in the operation.

Official Confirmation and Media Coverage

This development was corroborated by an unnamed Israeli official, who told Hebrew-language media that Hamas representatives had been allowed to enter areas of the region under military authority to look for the bodies of hostages, alongside Egypt’s and Red Cross teams.

“To achieve this goal, Hamas members were allowed to pass the yellow line,” the source was quoted as stating.

Video published by a regional network seemed to show individuals of a specialized group – part of the group’s military wing responsible for holding hostages – accompanying a humanitarian transport in a coastal area near Rafah, which is beyond Israeli military control.

Challenges in Finding Hostage Remains

The search for the remains of individuals taken captive has become one of the most delicate issues in the ceasefire agreed between the parties. Yet, the effort to find the bodies has proved difficult from the outset, given the existence of an approximate 60m tonnes of rubble across the territory, where, according to local health authorities, at least ten thousand residents are recorded as missing, trapped under the debris.

Conflicting Statements on Remains Location

The group has stated it does not know the precise locations of all the remains, saying it has been unable to communicate with a number of its teams that had been holding the captives and were allegedly eliminated during military strikes.

However, an Israeli government spokesperson claimed that the organization knew the whereabouts of the remains. “If Hamas made more of an effort, they would be able to retrieve the bodies of our captives,” the spokesperson said.

American Stance and Weapons Surrender Talks

Although the US president has acknowledged that some of the bodies are difficult to access, he said that “the rest they can return immediately and, for unknown reasons, they are failing to do so.”

“It may have to do with the surrender of weapons of the group,” he added.

Washington has said it has obtained assurances from Hamas that the group will surrender its arms, though no specific schedule has been established. They remains hesitant to give up its arms without solid assurances about the future of its members.
