The MEKA Pilot's Boosters Make Her the Supreme Flying Tank
Over many years, I had little interest of multiplayer games. I played plenty of them with my friends, but few held my interest. My aim was poor, and felt like more of a hindrance than help to my teammates. Then, the release of Overwatch in 2016 happened and introduced me to a character and an skill that's been stuck in my mind ever since.
At first glance, D.Va, a gamer girl turned child-soldier who commands a MEKA, didnât seem the type that should have appealed to me. Widowmaker was closer to my preference, with her gothic look and measured speech. But D.Va had the benefit of being my favorite class: a defender. The character that absorbs all that damage while protecting damage-dealers and healers. Additionally, D.Va has two forms: her out-of-mech state, in which she moves with a blaster, and her MEKA configuration, in which sheâs seated within her MEKA. This duality make her quite distinctive, but another feature that sets her apart among other defenders, and is the reason I inevitably fell in love: her melee and movement ability, Thrusters.
Boosters is an ability that lets D.Va (in her MEKA form) launch into the air, providing a velocity increase and letting her advance through the air for 24 meters. Additionally, players may change directions mid-flight, choosing to ascend onto a elevated position or veer entirely and head around obstacles like turns or the payload. It gives D.Va a dynamism and freedom of movement that no other defender can truly emulate â including Reinhardt with his charge ability. D.Vaâs Boosters is brilliant for my playstyle: I like to soak up the damage and protect my team, while having the option to retreat if the situation intensifies so I can regroup â it makes me feel indestructible, even though thatâs never really the case.
D.Vaâs Boosters isn't solely for travel; it additionally deals harm to enemies along the route.
Thereâs even a damage element to D.Vaâs Boosters ability. When opponents obstruct the path as youâre using Boosters, they are knocked back for a set amount of harm. Let me tell you, few things are as gratifying than finishing off a pesky Ashe by striking her directly with the mech. Thatâll teach her to attempt long-range attacks.
The hero might not rank as the âbestâ tank in Overwatch 2 nowadays, especially when youâve got heroes like certain other tanks whose raw defensive abilities make them a superior choice for the current meta. Yet she remains one of the most unique characters Iâve ever played in a multiplayer game. It seems unlikely there really is a D.Va equivalent, and believe me, after playing games like Marvel Rivals after falling off Overwatch 2, Iâve been looking for a replacement for D.Va, and a similar mobility skill, for years. The truth is, after playing her for years, it seems there isnât ever going to be as fun and innovative to play as D.Va. Despite any issues Overwatch 2 might have, character design and abilities are certainly not among them.
- D.Va excels in mobility and disruption.
- Her Thrusters provide unmatched aerial control.
- She can soak damage while creating opportunities for her team.
- Despite meta shifts, she remains a fan-favorite for distinctive approach.
