In a first day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “reimagine” the metropolis, declaring “a new era” and an audacious commencement to his administration.

A Historic Figure

The 34-year-old political star, who just a year ago remained a virtually unknown state assemblyman, has become the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He also made history by being the first to be sworn in using the Islamic holy text.

“A opportunity of this kind seldom arrives and rarer still is it that the public whose hands are upon the controls for transformation,” Mamdani remarked.

Defying counsel to lower expectations, the mayor asserted: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to redefine is that of limited ambitions. Beginning today we will govern boldly and broadly.”

Steering by Socialist Ideals

Mamdani explicitly affirmed his socialist politics. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will govern as one. I will not compromise my ideals for worry of being called extreme,” he said to rapturous applause.

The ceremony was a dual event, beginning with a late-night oath-taking in a old subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the front steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's election as a victory over powerful interests.

An Ambitious Platform

Mamdani now begins one of the most demanding jobs in American politics, with a agenda featuring:

• A halt to rent increases for about 1 million households
• A trial program of city-run grocery stores

The estimated $10 billion price tag of these services may pose a hurdle to fund. Mamdani has pledged to raise taxes on the city's top earners and corporations. However, as a municipality subject to the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Navigating Political Headwinds

The new mayor also faces skepticism from some Jewish New Yorkers alarmed by his past stances regarding Israel. Tensions were revealed during the transition when a senior aide resigned over offensive past tweets.

Mamdani has attempted to address these concerns by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, avoiding the appearance of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “socialist” and threatened withholding federal funding. Despite this, a prior encounter between the two was reportedly surprisingly friendly.

The Core Challenges of Governing

Traditionally, New York mayors are judged on their ability in providing essential functions: trash collection, curbing the rat infestation, fixing potholes, and ensuring smooth subway service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his team's anti-crime efforts, citing historically low numbers of murders and gun violence in 2025, with murders recorded.

As his administration begins, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Queens apartment to the stately Gracie Mansion. The previous occupant offered a unusual piece of advice about a reputed resident spirit in the home, which reportedly only troubles those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his speech with a simple statement: “The work has only just begun.”
