The White Sox Secure Star Hitter Munetaka Murakami on a Major Two-Year Contract.
In a major move for their rebuilding roster, the Chicago White Sox have officially added Japanese star Munetaka Murakami, completing a two-year contract bringing in the power-hitting player.
Contract Details and Added Benefits
The deal features a seven-figure signing bonus, to be paid within 30 days, in addition to annual pay of sixteen million for the upcoming season and $17M for the following year.
Notably, Murakami's 2027 salary may grow based on accolade achievements in 2026:
- An additional $1M for earning the league MVP award.
- $500,000 for finishing in the top three in MVP voting.
- $250,000 for finishing between fourth and tenth.
- An identical bonus for earning the ROY honor.
The contract provides that he will not be optioned to the farm system without his permission and grants him a unrestricted player at the end of the term. Additional perks include a club-supplied interpreter and travel costs between his home country and the States.
Compensation and Franchise History
As part of the signing, Chicago is obligated to provide a posting fee of over $6.5 million to the Tokyo Yakult Swallows, Murakami's longtime team in Japan's professional league. The Japanese club would also receive a supplemental fee of fifteen percent triggered salary escalators.
Murakami is set to become the fourth player from Japan to suit up for the White Sox, in the footsteps of pitcher Shingo Takatsu (2004-05), infielder Tadahito Iguchi (2005-07), and fielder Kosuke Fukudome (2012). Interestingly, Takatsu previously coached Murakami back in Japan.
On-Field Accomplishments
Murakami, a left-handed hitter who will turn 26 on February 2nd, bolsters a promising group of offensive players in Chicago that contains prospects like Colson Montgomery, Kyle Teel, and Chase Meidroth. The club are finished with a difficult season, placing last in the American League Central but showing a notable improvement from the prior campaign.
A two-time Most Valuable Player honors in consecutive seasons, Murakami made history with a monumental 2022 season where he belted 56 home runs, eclipsing the longstanding record for a NPB hitter formerly held by icon Sadaharu Oh. The following day in the final against the Team USA, he slugged a game-tying homer in the second inning, helping Japan's subsequent 3-2 victory.
