Three Lions Coach Reveals His Philosophy: The England Jersey Should Feel Like a Cape, Not Body Armour.
In the past, the England assistant coach was playing for Accrington Stanley. Currently, he is focused on helping the England manager claim the World Cup trophy in 2026. His journey from athlete to trainer started as an unpaid coach coaching youngsters. Barry reflects, “Evening sessions, a partial pitch, organizing 11-a-side … deflated balls, scarce bibs,” and he was hooked. He had found his destiny.
Staggering Ascent
The coach's journey stands out. Commencing as Paul Cook’s assistant, he developed a reputation through unique exercises and strong interpersonal abilities. His roles at clubs included top European clubs, and he held international positions across multiple countries. His players include big names such as Thiago Silva, Kevin De Bruyne, Cristiano Ronaldo. Currently, in the England setup, it's all-consuming, the “pinnacle” according to him.
“Dreams are the starting point … Yet I'm convinced that passion overcomes challenges. You envision the goal then you break it down: ‘How do we do it, each day, each phase?’ We dream about winning the World Cup. However, vision doesn't suffice. It's essential to develop a methodical process so we can for optimal success.”
Detail-Oriented Approach
Obsession, particularly on fine points, characterizes his journey. Putting in long hours all the time, he and Tuchel challenge limits. Their strategies feature player analysis, a plan for hot conditions ahead of the tournament in North America, and creating a unified squad. The coach highlights “Team England” and dislikes phrases including "pause".
“This isn't a vacation or a rest,” he explains. “We had to build something where players are eager to join and where they're challenged that returning to club duty feels easier.”
Ambitious Trainers
The assistant coach says and Tuchel as “very greedy”. “Our goal is to master each element of play,” he states. “We strive to own every metre of the pitch and that’s what we spend many of our days on. It’s our job not just to keep up with developments and to lead and create our own ones. This is continuous to have this problem/solution-finding mentality. And to simplify complexity.
“We get 50 days alongside the squad ahead of the tournament. We need to execute an intricate approach for a tactical edge and we have to make it so clear in our 50 days with them. It's about moving it from concept to details to understanding to action.
“To build a methodology enabling productivity in the 50 days, we have to use all the time available from when we started. During periods without the team, we have to build relationships among them. It's essential to invest time in calls with players, we have to see them in stadiums, feel them, touch them. If we limit ourselves to that time, it's impossible.”
World Cup Qualifiers
He is getting ready for the final pair for the World Cup preliminaries – versus Serbia in London and in Albania. They've already ensured their place at the finals with six wins out of six and six clean sheets. But there will be no easing off; on the contrary. This is the time to strengthen the squad's character, to maintain progress.
“The manager and I agree that the style of play ought to embody everything that is good from the top division,” Barry says. “The athleticism, the versatility, the strength, the work ethic. The national team shirt needs to be highly competitive but light to wear. It should feel like a cape instead of heavy armour.
“To ensure it's effortless, it's crucial to offer a style that allows them to play freely like they do every week, that resonates with them and lets them release restrictions. They must be stuck less in thinking and focus more on action.
“There are morale boosts you can get as a coach in the first and final thirds – playing out from the back, attacking high up. However, in midfield in that part of the ground, it seems football is static, especially in England's top flight. Everybody has so much information currently. They know how to set up – structured defenses. Our aim is to speed up play in that central area.”
Drive for Growth
Barry’s hunger for improvement is all-consuming. While training for his pro license, he felt anxious regarding the final talk, since his group included stars such as Frank Lampard and Michael Carrick. To enhance his abilities, he entered tough situations imaginable to improve his talks. Such as Walton jail in Liverpool, where he coached prisoners during an exercise.
Barry graduated in 2020 at the top of the class, with his thesis – focusing on set-pieces, where he studied numerous set-plays – was published. Frank was one of those impressed and he brought Barry as part of his backroom at Stamford Bridge. When Lampard was sacked, it spoke volumes that Chelsea removed most of his staff but not Barry.
The next manager with the club took over, and shortly after, he and Barry won the Champions League. When Tuchel was dismissed, the coach continued in the setup. Once Tuchel resurfaced with Bayern, he recruited Barry away from London to work together again. English football's governing body consider them a duo like previous management pairs.
