What's Inside the Case Henry Unlocks in the Hit Series?
For much of the fifth and final season of the popular Netflix show, Holly Wheeler and Max Mayfield are imprisoned in a realm of memories built from the memories of Henry Creel. The search for freedom in episode 6 forces them to relive a traumatic incident from Henry's youth—an event that potentially carries the secret to his downfall for good.

Unearthing the Secrets of the Cavern
Upon meeting Max in the world called Camazotz, Holly discovers she is hiding out in a cave that Henry avoids at all costs. A clever observation a viewing device taken from Henry's old home helps Holly understand that the true terror lies outside of the cave. By aligning her view to the cut-out, she and Max plummet into a abandoned tunnel.
There, they witness a child version of Henry find an wounded, fearful individual. As the boy offers aid, the man reacts violently, striking Henry in the hand. To protect himself, Henry ends the threat with a rock. "Did this make Henry evil?" Holly asks tearfully. It was a factor, but the event went deeper than a fight for life.

The Philadelphia Experiment and Stolen Research
The play reveals the 1943 event, which reportedly teleported a vessel into a realm dubbed the Abyss. The ship was attacked, and the sole survivor was the ship's commander, who emerged in a vegetative state with an different blood composition.
That survivor's offspring, the future Dr. Brenner, attempted to recreate this experiment in remote Nevada. One of his scientists pilfered lab samples to give to the Communist spies, who were desperate to launch their version of the tests. This spy in the cavern was that very thief.
Unlocking the Mystery
Given what is known about Brenner's work, the container would assuredly have samples of Captain Brenner's infected blood. In the scene, Henry is bleeding from his hand. It's probable he was infected upon contact with the blood, leading to the awakening of his powers—abilities he would genetically impart to the children under Brenner's care.
Alternatively, the box could have held exotic matter that later made its way to the secret facility, where it maintains the stability of the Upside Down. The stage play explains that Henry ended up in the Abyss, returning hours later fundamentally changed. From then on, he struggles with the control of a malevolent force, reminiscent of how Will Byers was influenced by the entity in the past.
Confronting Terror
His lasting fear linked to that memory highlights how profoundly traumatic the encounter was for him. While he commands the collective consciousness and seeks to merge the Abyss into Hawkins, a fragment of his psyche remains. The villain weaponizes terror, and the series is building toward a climactic battle between the monster and Will, who has confronted his greatest terrors to gain strength.
His confrontation has neutralized a key tactic of Vecna. More importantly, Will now is aware of what the monster's own weakness, and this may grant a decisive edge in the endgame conflict to come.
