The Philadelphia Experiment and Stolen Research
The play reveals the 1943 event, which reportedly teleported a vessel into a realm dubbed the Abyss. The ship was attacked, and the sole survivor was the ship's commander, who emerged in a vegetative state with an different blood composition.
That survivor's offspring, the future Dr. Brenner, attempted to recreate this experiment in remote Nevada. One of his scientists pilfered lab samples to give to the Communist spies, who were desperate to launch their version of the tests. This spy in the cavern was that very thief.
Unlocking the Mystery
Given what is known about Brenner's work, the container would assuredly have samples of Captain Brenner's infected blood. In the scene, Henry is bleeding from his hand.
